Insurance Terms Defined

Being a doctor in a small office I’ve had the opportunity to work and learn numerous aspects of running things.  Insurance is the primary aspect I hear questions about on a daily basis.  It seems as though each day insurance policies are changing. Regardless if you have a brand new policy midyear, or have maintained your current policy, there are a handful of terms you should understand.

All medical offices have a fee schedule.  A fee schedule is a list of services and the amount billed to an insurance company.  These fee schedules are determined based on location and other aspects which as a patient you could care less about. On a very basic level, paying for insurance gives you the privilege of paying that companies rates.

Medical office rate for exam: $100
Blue Cross Blue Shield Rate for same exam: $80

If you have BCBS insurance, you can only pay up to $80 for that exam.  You get the $20 discount.

Here are a list of other terms you should...

Kiddos and Chiropractors

By: Taunya Farr

Let’s be honest, having kids in school is a breeding ground for all kinds of germs.  It might seem as if you or someone you know always has a sick kid home with a cold, an ear infection, strep throat, etc.  I started bringing my kids in for Chiropractic care about a year ago.  Initially they were skeptical to have an adjustment but Dr. Jordan and Dr. Jade quickly made them feel comfortable and I’m certain they giggled through most of their adjustment and it was over before they even finished talking about their Christmas Wish List.

Since then, I’ve noticed that my kids (ages 6 and 8) seem much happier, healthier and more calm from getting adjusted regularly.  If they happen to be coming on with something, I’ll bring them in and it seems that the adjustments help “kick” the ailment much more quickly.  Ear infections seem to be a thing of the past and my two children will actually ASK for an adjustment if...

4 Ways to Avoid the Halloween Candy Temptations

October has arrived, and now you can go to Jewel and buy candy by the truck load without getting weird looks! “It’s fine! The candy is for the neighborhood kids!” The question is, what happens with the candy that is left over?? I always buy the candy I like so I can pack it in my lunch once Halloween is over… Whoops! When it comes to Halloween candy, I do not know where to draw the line!! When I have multiple mini Twix, Kit-Kat or Snickers in front of me, it’s hard not to go for it. This year, I will have some willpower and use the following tricks to avoid the sugary temptations that Halloween brings.

  1. Buy Candy You Don’t Like

This was so hard for me to do. I walked past the bags filled with M&M’s, Twix, Three Musketeers and Snickers and went towards the Sweet Tarts, Whoppers, and Chewing Gum that I knew I wouldn’t eat. I’m pretty sure I could hear them calling my name! I thought to myself, why am I buying candy that I...

The Subject No One Wants To Talk About: Chronic Constipation

Many people including the patients we see don’t want to bring up their “regularity” or lack there of.  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that over 4 million people in the united states experience frequent constipation.  That number alone results in 2.5 million doctor visits a year! Studies are showing that patients are frustrated with conventional treatments that are not effective or long lasting enough.

It is time that we take a bigger look into natural alternatives to things that ail us.  Chiropractic care has been used by chronic constipation sufferers to help promote regularity for years!  Your chiropractor not only uses adjustments of the spine along with dietary recommendations to improve this condition quickly.

Constipation occurs when your colon absorbs too much water or the muscle contractions become slow and sluggish.  What leads to either case most often is a poor diet.  Most american diets are lacking...

Up All Night - Newborn Symptoms

Over the years we’ve seen numerous women throughout and following their pregnancy.  Many of these women bring their newborns in for treatment as well.  As we check in with mom we always check in to see how their babies are doing.  Are they sleeping enough?  Are their cries satisfied with changing or being fed? Are they pooping enough or too much?

As simple as these questions are, there are many times the answers are no to more than one of the above questions.  When a baby is struggling, the first question has to lead to diet of baby and mom.  If our patient is breast feeding, then we need to address her diet to find out where the babies distress is coming from.

There are many foods that infants prove to be sensitive to causing symptoms such as colic, sleeping difficulties, diarrhea, constipation, digestive distress and gas.  Every patient is different, but the first foods to remove from the diet include:

  • Beans
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • ...

Not All Supplements Are Created Equal

Shopping for the right supplements can be an overwhelming task.  Nearly every store has an aisle from floor to ceiling filled with hundreds of different brands.  Not only are stores carrying supplements, BUT you can buy them off infomercials and individual sales companies.  Where do you start and who do you trust?

Supplements can most definitely help recovery time, improve energy and aid in nearly every function of the body; IF you are taking the right type.  The number one reason I hear in the office for why people stopped taking their supplements is they didn’t “feel” a difference.  Pending on the purpose and the quality of the supplement you will not always “feel” a change within your body.

If you take anything away from this blog post please know that generic supplements aren’t even worth the $5.00 that you paid.  I hate to put it so bluntly, but they are the lowest quality on the market.  The FDA...

Determine Your Body Fat Percentage

body fat health Mar 31, 2021

Body fat percentage is simply the percentage of fat that your body contains. For your body to function properly it is essential that your body contains a certain amount of fat. Body fat helps regulate your body temperature, it cushions and insulates organs and is the main form of the body’s energy storage. It is important for everyone to have a healthy amount of body fat.

When people say they want to lose weight it is implied that they want to lose fat.

Calculating your body fat percentage is a better way to determine what your weight loss goals should be and if they are realistic. Rather than just stepping on a scale and deciding how much weight you want to lose, it is better to determine your body fat percentage and achieve a healthy range. So before you decide you need to lose 20 pounds, first remember that your body weight consists of lean body mass and body fat.

The amount of body fat that you do or do not have can be potentially dangerous to your health. Carrying...

Not Just Good For Calfs; The Benefits of Colostrum

Colostrum is a supplement that has been around for awhile, but new research is coming to light everyday. Colostrum is the first milk produced by cows during the initial days after giving birth. This type is called bovine colostrum. This milk is very rich in immunoglobulins (proteins that help boost the immune system and fight germs). There are also other compounds not found in regular milk such as growth factors, cytokines and nucleosides.

Enough with the science already, let me tell you what it can help with. Studies are showing supplementing with bovine colostrum can help improve:

*Immune System Support

*Athletic Performance

*Gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea, etc.

*Fat Utilization

*Serotonin levels in the brain

*AND MORE!

Basically speaking, the immune factors in colostrum support the resistance to colds and the flu, to acute or chronic bacterial or fungal conditions. In turn this will also help your gut repair and improve your nutrient absorption.
